In June 10th, 2014 .UK top-level domain name registration was made available by Nominet Registry. Before that date it only possible to register a .UK domain with one of the available additions such as .CO.UK, .ORG.UK etc.
Now .uk became part of the .UK domain family, joining .co.uk, .org.uk, and .me.uk.
At the time of .UK domain registration launch, existing .co.uk, .org.uk, and .me.uk domains owner got five years to register the corresponding .uk domain name.
This was assigned to owners that they have the ‘right of registration’ to the matching .uk domain name.
Example – If you have your own website name as ownwebsite.org.uk, then your equivalent .uk domain reserved for you, ie ownwebsite.uk reserved for you
The deadline to get reserved .uk domain names will expire at 6 am BST (UTC+1) on the 25th of June 2021.
What Happens Now?
From 1st July 2021, the reserved .UK domains that had not been registered by there respective domains, that were offered on a basis of first-come, first-served in two stages.
Stage One –
It was a release process, that was running from the 1st to the 5th of July, that made previously reserved names available in batches.
Stage Two –
All remaining .uk domains from stage one will become available in stage two. So, domains that were released in batch and not registered that will available through the normal registration process.
